Musquash Trail Work Day – April 17th 8am - noon.  Meet at Hickory Hill Entrance

Londonderry Trailways is hosting our annual spring Musquash Trail Work day on Saturday. April 17th.
This year we’ll be extending a trail into the southern part of the Musquash to a new trailhead on Tanager Way.  The work will involved removing small trees, clearing light brush, raking the trail surface, and painting blazes along the trail.
The new trail will open up some the woodlands to the south of the Landing Trail and will provide a connection to the Tanager Way neighborhood.  Much like the new White Trail that we opened last year, the new trail will cross through some scenic hills in an area most visitors are not familiar with.
We’ll meet at the Hickory Hill entrance at 8am on the 17th.  Please bring gloves, water, and appropriate attire for the day.  We’ll provide the tools.
Hope you can join us!

Musquash Trail System Expanded!

The new White Trail was recently completed opening the northern portion of the Musquash Conservation Area to hiking, biking and cross country skiing.  The new trail can be accessed directly from the Faucher Road trailhead or it can be reached from the most northern portion of the Blue Trail (also known as Old Alexander Road).  The White Trail intersects the Blue Trail at two different locations (east and west) and thus it can also be used as a loop trail.  The White Trail adds approximately 1.5 miles to the existing trail system.

White Trail 3

The White Trail starts about 0.2 miles from the Faucher Rd Entrance

The northern section of the Musquash Conservation Area is distinctly different from the portions of the Musquash accessed from the Hickory Hill and Sarah Beth trailheads.  The northern section of the Musquash consists of gently rolling hills with very few wet areas.  The White Trail rolls along with the topography: climbing hills, traversing a ravine and crossing a stream.  The White Trail is quickly becoming a favorite of the Musquash regulars.

The construction of the White Trail was a team effort consisting of members from the Londonderry Conservation Committee, Londonderry Trailways and Russell Saur (a local Boy Scout Eagle candidate).  The Conservation Commission and Trailways planned and cut the new trail this past fall.   Russell and the Boy Scouts completed the trail.  They added a kiosk at the Faucher Road trailhead; placed signs and white blazes along the trail, and built a bridge to cross the only stream.  Please get out and enjoy this significant new addition to the Musquash trail system.

The Overlook Trail (yellow blazes) also received a face lift this fall.  Sections of the trail were rerouted to move them away from the wet areas as the trail makes it way to the “Overlook”.  The “Overlook” was also cleared of overgrowth to once again provide a clear view of the Musquash to the northwest.

Plans for 2010 include rerouting the Overlook Trail west of the “Overlook” out to the Betty Mack trail, establishing a trailhead on Tanager Way, expanding the trail system within the Musquash and general maintenance.  We will need all types of help to achieve these significant goals.
