Londonderry Trailways: Activities

This page contains information on specific activities undertaken by Londonderry Trailways.  For information on our ongoing projects, click here or select Projects from the menu bar to the left.

Meetings:
Londonderry Trailways holds meetings periodically throughout the year from 7:30 to 9:00 pm in the basement meeting room of the Leach Library, 276 Mammoth Road, Londonderry NH 03053  (603)432-1132.  We usually communicate meetings and trail days activities through our Yahoo Group. For more information, go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LTrails . Anyone interested in learning more about who we are or in joining the organization is invited to attend.

Trail Days:
In addition, we also hold various trail days to build or maintain trails, participate in community activities such as Old Home Days and Beautify Londonderry, and make a presence at appropriate public forums such as town or highway planning meetings.

In 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 we held an average of three to four separate trail days per season. We have logged approximately 200 volunteer hours per year working directly in the woods. Londonderry Trailways partners with the local Boy and Girl Scouts of America and with members of the New England Mountain Biking Association (NEMBA) on our volunteer trail days and master to-do list. Here are some examples of our work and activities:

July 13, 2002 - Musquash Trail Work - Musquash Conservation Area
Peter DeSantis planned and led the construction of a new bridge and the reconstruction of the intersection of the Betty Mack and the Overlook Trails.  The bridge was built by nailing new treads to two long logs spanning a marshy area of the Overlook Trail.  The trail junction of the Betty Mack and the Overlook trails had become wet and rutted from overuse and heavy rains this summer.  The crew rerouted the Overlook trail around the wet area, shoring it up with a long log and rocks, and then reconstructed the trail intersection making the junction drier and easier to locate.

June 1, 2002 - Musquash Bridge Project - Musquash Conservation Area
Peter DeSantis planned and led the construction of two bridges through two particularly wet areas on the Betty Mack Trail.  8 sixteen-foot sections of boardwalk were assembled at the home of a gracious neighbor and were then hitched to a (properly permitted) ATV and transported to the bridge sites.  Once on site, they were arranged and finished off.  The project took over 7 hours and has improved hiking and biking through one of the nicest sections of trail in the Musquash.

This trail day, completed the trail improvements portion of the KPCA grant (the parking improvements portion of the grant is scheduled to be completed spring 2002).  68 Volunteer hours were logged at this event!

June 16, 2001: Musquash Trail Maintenance - Musquash Conservation Area
Volunteers helped clear and reroute the trail to the overlook to help repair damage caused by motorized off highway vehicles.  We logged 40 volunteer hous at this event.

December 2, 2000: Kendall Pond Cleanup day
14 volunteers provided 27 volunteer hours performing trail cleanup after logging.  Roads left by the logging crews as part of the Conservation Commission's selective logging of the area (performed every 15 years) were converted into trails. This was the cleanup that took place before the heavy trail improvements grant project which was completed 10 months later.

August 17-20, 2000: Old Home Days
