Londonderry Trailways: Master
Plan
Londonderry Trailways has developed a Bike/Pedestrian
Master Plan Map (coming soon to the website). This very large map plots
out our ideas of where bike/pedestrian pathways are needed in Town. We
would love to hear where else YOU would like to see bike/ped pathways.
The more input the better. Read on for a few of our ideas.
Connections to the Town Recreation
Complex:
The recreation complex off of Nelson Rd. can
currently be reached by two rough trails one at each end of the complex
area. This area has various ball fields, tennis courts, a small playground,
etc.
-
The first trail connects the Police Station/Library
complex to the Recreation complex. It starts behind the police station;
the surface is dirt but becomes muddy during the wet season. A boardwalk
has been built to address this problem, which is still adequate. At the
point of entrance to the fields, the trail is narrow, unmarked, and in
one spot actually dead ends at a fence.
-
The second trail connects the King's neighborhood
to the Recreation complex. It starts, off the Northwest corner of the main
Rec. complex parking lot. It is a wide dirt trail running along a stone
wall. It can be walked or ridden by a mountain bike. It is in fair condition,
but very rough with tree roots and is also unmarked. It terminates at the
intersection of King Charles and King Phillip Roads. It is believed that
most of the trail is currently on town owned property.
Both trails could be improved by:
-
A firmer surface (hard packed dirt, stone dust or
pavement)
-
Consistent width
-
Installing informational and directional signs
-
Trimming of trees and vegetation
Improvements to these trails would benefit residents
by encouraging more residents of the Kings neighborhood to use the trails
to get to the recreational fields, thereby reducing the number of car trips.
Connections to the centrally located
schools:
Wouldn't it be great if families who lived close
to the schools could walk or bike ride safely to school, if they chose
to? If you look at a map there are several neighborhoods within walking
or bike riding distance to the schools, as the crow flies. For example,
both the Holton Circle and the Wilshire Drive neighborhoods would be served
well by a path (8-10ft wide) running adjacent to Pillsbury Road up to Mammoth
Road. From the Pillsbury Road path, there could either be a path running
behind the schools (for the shortest distance) or a sidewalk added in front
of the schools, along Mammoth Road. What do you think? This sort of project
has been done in many other New Hampshire towns like Wolfboro, Derry and
Litchfield to name just a few. These projects cost a great deal of money
BUT they can be paid for by Federal money that is available through a granting
process. There are several other connections to the schools that make sense
as well. Let us know if you have an idea you would like represented on
our Master Plan Bike/Pedestrian Map.
Bike lane or shoulder along Mammoth
Road:
Mammoth Road is a major artery running through
Londonderry. Although many people ride it every day in the warmer weather
months, it can be a dangerous ride. The most dangerous spots are the areas
north of Shasta Drive and south of Route 102 where there is absolutely
no shoulder at all.
Mammoth road is a state owned road, therefore
Londonderry Trailways has written a letter to the NH Department of Transportation
requesting that a 5-foot shoulder be added to these dangerous sections
of Mammoth Road. Stay tuned we'll keep you posted. |
