Londonderry Trailways: Railroad Bed Area

The former Lawrence to Manchester railroad bed runs through downtown Derry and across the northern quadrant of Londonderry. The RR bed runs parallel to Rockingham Rd. from the Derry town line, past exit 5 (passing under the highway), past Coca-Cola and past North Elementary School. The RR bed crosses Rockingham Rd. at Sanborn Rd. near the North School and then continues across Old Mammoth Rd. It terminates at Harvey Rd. because of the Manchester Airport expansion.

The State of NH owns most of the bed in the town, except for a small portion near the Derry town line and the portion northwest of Mammoth Rd. The trail now gets heavy off-road use by ATV's. It is difficult to walk or ride by bicycle because of soft sand and poor conditions.

Improvements to this trail could include:

  • Improve the surface by grading and compacting,
  • Directional signage,
  • Tree trimming and erosion control,
  • Trash removal.
Benefits to residents:
  • Fantastic 2 to 3 mile stretch of dirt path, much of which is wooded,
  • Connection to Derry and Airport areas,
  • Access to view many wetlands,
  • Alternative to busy and narrow Rockingham Rd.
Negative aspects:
  • Bed is in sparsely settled area on eastern edge of town.
  • Limits on off-road vehicles may be necessary to preserve surface

  • May need some easements from property owners to connect to Derry
